Acer saccharinum is native to the eastern and central United States and southeastern Canada. It is often found along waterways and in swamps. Silver Maple is a large tree that grows 15-25 m in height, and 100 cm in diameter; longevity up to 130 years. The flowers are in dense clusters, produced in early spring; the fruit are winged samaras. The autumn colors are less pronounced in A. saccharinum, as leaves turn pale yellow or brown, not red. The species is closely related to Red Maple (Acer rubrum) and can hybridise with it; the hybrids are known as the Freeman maple (Acer x freemanii).
