Yellow-faced Pocket-Gopher (Cratogeomys castanops) |
Synonyms: Pappogeomys castanops |
The Yellow-faced Pocket-Gopher occurs in the south-central USA and north-eastern Mexico, where it inhabits open habitats with calcareous, clay, clay-loam, sandy and silty soils. This species excavates long burrows with branching tunnels. Cratogeomys castanops feeds mainly on the underground portions of plants, but it also forages above the ground on green vegetation. At one site in the Texas Panhandle, this species occupied sandy soils only if Geomys bursarius was absent.
