Flowering Plants (Angiosperms) |
The Flowering Plants (Angiosperms) are the most diverse group of land plants, with 416 families, 13,200 genera and 295,500 known species. They are distinguished from gymnosperms by having flowers, endosperm within the seeds, and the production of fruits that contain the seeds. It has been estimated that between 40,000 and 100,000 species of flowering plants remain undescribed, mostly in the tropics. Only 2.1% of the world´s plants are found in North America (north of Mexico).
Our photo collection includes images of approximately 800 species belonging to 119 families. The majority are from North America, although we also photographed flowering plants in South America, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean.
Flowering plants are arranged by family, alphabetically, approximately thirty families per page. We will add a search option by geographic region at some later date. This website uses traditional plant taxonomy; recent changes, in genera and species placement within families, are included where deemed appropriate.
